Air Filters Make A Difference: Which One Do You Need?

It may seem counterintuitive, but indoor air is often more polluted than the air outside. That’s one reason it is important to use quality air filters and change them regularly. Air filters also help protect your heating and air conditioning equipment by preventing particles and other contaminants from entering the system. Dirty filters can cause your equipment to run less efficiently — meaning higher monthly utility bills.

A variety of filters offer a variety of air-cleaning capabilities:

  • Standard fiberglass or polyester filters are the most basic type. They are relatively inexpensive, but they offer the lowest quality. They provide the least amount of filtration, so they are not the best choice for family members with allergies or asthma.
  • Reusable filters can be cleaned monthly. So while the initial investment may be higher, you don’t have to purchase new filters every month. The efficiency of reusable types of filters can vary significantly, though. Look for one that provides the filtration you need.
  • Pleated filters can trap smaller particles, providing better filtration and improved indoor air quality.
  • Deep-pleated filters provide some of the best filtration available. These filters may require a customized filter slot, but they have long life spans and generally only need to be changed once or twice a year. They also provide better equipment efficiency than standard one-inch filters.
  • Electrostatic filters are also very effective at removing smaller particles and only need to be changed every few months.
  • HEPA filters are an excellent choice for families who require significant improvements in air quality. They can remove up to 98 percent of airborne particles.
